Remote Online Notarization (RON) allows documents to be notarized electronically using secure audio-video technology instead of meeting in person. The signer and notary connect through an approved online platform, and the entire session is recorded for compliance purposes. 

In Tennessee, the signer must personally appear before the notary through live video at the time of signing. Identity verification is completed using credential analysis and knowledge-based authentication (KBA) questions. This service is only available for current or former U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and temporary noncitizens authorized to work by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) .

Signers must upload a valid government-issued photo ID for verification before the session begins. The system checks the ID for authenticity and confirms the signer’s identity against public or proprietary databases. 

Once identity is verified, the signer electronically signs the document and the notary applies a digital seal and electronic signature. The completed notarized document is then delivered electronically and stored according to Tennessee record-retention requirements.
